The story is set on a winter night and begins when a shopkeeper sees a man named Seth hid a pound of butter in his hat. It was worth nine pence so the shopkeeper decided to have a little bit of fun. So he didn’t let the man leave the shop and made him sit down by the stove.

Although Seth tried to make multiple excuses to leave, the shopkeeper insisted in order to accomplish his plan. He even put more sticks on the stove and made the man stay with him in the hot room while he had the butter under his hat. He even pretended not to notice the butter that started pouring on Seth's face.

The shopkeeper finally let the man go when all the butter was melted and told him he didn't charge him the nine pounds because of the fun he had had.
