Dear Ana,
How have you been? I hope my letter finds you in best of health and spirits. I am writing this letter to keep you updated on the situation at home.
We are all shut down, to keep everyone from catching the virus at the same time. The schools are closed and we are doing our homework online. Everything but food stores are closed now here.
But how is that going to affect us economically? I fear Romania will feel much pain very soon. I am not even sure the authorities of Romania are handling this matter properly, economically speaking. I mean they are practically isolating everybody but they don’t offer enough support for people that need it the most. Many small businesses will go bankrupt, you cannot sustain a business without customers. So we could expect price hikes and higher unemployment through the summer.
But if the social distancing recommendations and mandates are followed, and if they work, then our economy may have a chance to start rebuilding before summer ends.
And as fear is starting to settle in, they are making it even worse by promoting only the news related to this topic. That’s why I prefer switching to music or watch a movie instead. Panic can’t bring anything good. I think it is going to be a long hard recovery. Unfortunately we have extremely weak leadership in this country. So we must be responsible and take all the necessary precautions ourselves and offer support to the elderly.
If we slow down the progression of the virus and do what we can to avoid spreading it, it may have short term impact on us and our families. Stay safe and please keep me updated on the current situation in Spain as well.
