1. Dorando Pietri from Italy had help from people to finish the race, because he was very tired and fell down four times.

2. Abebe Bikila from Ethiopia raced barefoot.

3. Vanderlei de Lima from Brazil was stopped in the middle of his race, by an Irishman from the crowd.  

4. Bob Beamon from the USA broke an Olympic record for his 8.9 metres jump.

5. Vanderlei de Lima from Brazil won a marathon bronze medal, in 2004, Athens.
